Why Run A Summer Reading Program?
Studies show that school-age children lose many of their reading skills over the summer months if they do not continue to read while they are out of school. Summer reading clubs first started when library staff realized that they could make a difference.

Promotional Materials and Prize Materials
When your materials arrive, familiarize yourself with what has been sent to your library for running the Club. The notebooks and stickers are for recording and rewarding the children’s reading (or being read to in the case of pre-school participants); and they'll enjoy collecting the prizes, too.

Promote Your Summer Reading Club
Hosting a successful summer reading program takes careful planning and plenty of promotion in your community.

  • Saturday, June 17: Get Your Summer Read On Day! Across Canada on June 17, libraries celebrate with fun activities and staff engagement to promote the TD Summer Reading Club – and get kids registered! ENGLISH | FRENCH
  • Registration of Participants: Use this paper form to register participants, or the excel spreadsheet; you will need to report this information at the end of the Club.
  • Templates: Use the templates provided to create promotional brochures for your Club
  • Contact Schools: In June, deliver the Top Recommended Reads brochure to the schools, send them home in parent newsletters, do classroom visits to tell the children about the program and give them a Fortune Teller, and ask to put posters up in the school.
  • Outreach to Community Organizations: Visit and present to child care centres, girls and boys clubs, faith-based organizations, etc.
  • Plan a Launch: Have a launch event to kick off the summer and invite local dignitaries. Announce it in your local newspaper or on local TV/radio.
  • Create Displays in the library to promote the club.

Running the Program

  • Statistics and Evaluation: Update your Sample Statistics and Evaluation Form regularly throughout the program. You will be required to report this data at the end of the Club.
  • Registration of Participants: Use this paper form to register participants, or the excel spreadsheet; you will need to report this information at the end of the Club.
  • Count how many children come to EACH session. Your Library Manager will need a count of how many sessions, and how many participants/session to complete the library’s Annual Report to the government at the end of the year. 
  • Select books from your library’s collection that relate to the Club’s theme to use in your programming. See Recommended Reads on the Club website.
  • Ideas for age-appropriate programs and activities for pre-school and school-age children can be found in the Staff Resources on the Club website.
  • Plan for accessible programming for children with print disabilities; CELA and NNELS have great suggestions on the Club website.
  • Special Events: Consider hosting picnics, field trips, or bringing in a children’s author or entertainer.

Winding Up the Program

  • Consider an awards ceremony to honour the accomplishments of each child, or host a closing picnic.
  • Fill out the TD Statistics and Evaluation Form. The current 2017 Statistics and Evaluation form will be available later in the summer. Complete it and email/fax to Peace Library System at the end of your Summer Reading Club. Email to rweniger@peacelibrarysystem.ab.ca or fax to (780) 539-5285. Completion of the form is a requirement of having participated in the Club and for having received the free Promotional Materials. The deadline for sending the form in to Peace Library System is Friday, September 8, 2017.
